Backlink Strategy – Authority

Backlink Strategy – Authority – All Links are not “Created Equal”

Another major Backlink Strategy is the use of High Authority sites to obtain your backlinks.

Quite frankly, it is less important as to how many backlinks you have supporting your landing page than it is the Authority of those backlinking sites.

If you have a backlink from a site with a PR1 giving you a backlink, it is worth 10 times more than a backlink from a source with a PR0.

If you have a backlink from a site with a PR5 giving you a backlink, it is worth 100,000 times more than a backlink from a source with PR0.

The two examples above are from a tutorial by Market Samurai so I trust the statistical analysis. It is indeed incredible how much more power a backlink has as the PR of the origin increases.

Page Rank is just one consideration that you must use when determining your backlink strategy.

It is also shown that .edu and .gov sites are generally considered by Google as High Authority sites and any backlinks from these sites will also help you enormously with your backlink success.

So if you have a choice between seeking out .edu and .gov backlinks versus .com and .net backlinks, all else being equal, go with the .edu and .gov.

Another very high source for Authority backlinks is the DMOZ directory.

DMOZ is an enormously powerful website.  In fact, it is the largest human edited directory on the internet.

What this means is that every site that is accepted by DMOZ is reviewed by a human, not an automated system.  Only sites with excellent content are accepted into this directory.

DMOZ.org has a PR8 rating and an Alexa rating of 459.  This could provide an enormous boost to your site if you are accepted by them to be included into their Open Directory Project.

Here is the link to the DMOZ.org Open Directory Project Website.  There is no charge by DMOZ if you qualify to be listed.

There is another very valuable High Authority tactic recommended by many experts but quite frankly, unless you are well established in internet marketing, it may be financially risky.  I myself have not ventured to this resource to date.

Yahoo! Directory is an extremely High Authority site that can be as valuable as DMOZ.org, but with a price.  Here is a quote from their site:

Your request to be listed in the Directory will be reviewed and the Yahoo! editorial team will respond to you within 7 business days, for a review fee of only $299 ($600 for adult sites). If your listing is accepted into the Directory, there will be a $299 recurring annual fee in subsequent years ($600 for adult sites) to maintain the listing.

Personally, I will go with the free DMOZ directory and wait until I can afford the luxury of a Yahoo! Directory listing.

So in conclusion, always consider the Authority of the sites you are using for your backlink strategy.  All backlinks are good to have but all are not “created equal”.
